Brian Hughes
Brian enjoyed a distinguished 17-year career with KPMG as an Audit partner and operational leader, serving as KPMG’s National Private Markets Group Leader and National Co-Leader of the firm’s Venture Capital Practice until September 2019. He currently serves as Public Company Board Director and Audit Committee Chair to three companies and is an experienced advisor to VC and PE-backed portfolio companies, leveraging his nearly 40 years of diversified experience in public accounting with a unique specialization in serving high-growth Venture Capital and Private Equity portfolio companies as well as public companies.
At KPMG Brian’s visionary, inspirational leadership catapulted his channel forward, making it an engine of growth nationally. His client work centered on supporting entrepreneurs of high-growth companies throughout their entire life cycle: from development stage, through subsequent rounds of financing and other capital formation transactions, on to an IPO—he has worked on more than 40 over the course of his career—or acquisition by larger market participant. His work has spanned industries, with a concentration in the technology and healthcare spaces. Prior to joining KPMG, Brian was at Arthur Andersen for 21 years, where he made Partner and was the Leader of the Enterprise Group.
Building on his interests and experience as a strategic advisor to CEOs of public and private companies, Brian was the founder of an annual intensive CEO training program called QuantumShift. Transforming Businesses.” He is widely respected at KPMG for his thought leadership via several publications, including the Privately Speaking series and the quarterly Venture Pulse report—which remains one of the firm’s most popular and widely read thought leadership pieces.
Brian earned both his BS in Accounting and Economics and his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business and has been a Philadelphian ever since. He previously served on the Board of Directors for the New Jersey Technology Council and for the Greater Philadelphia Alliance for Capital and Technologies. He is currently an Advisory Board Member for the Penn Medicine Abramson Cancer Center. Brian and his wife, Julie, have been married for 38 years and are the proud parents of three hardworking daughters, all who have played collegiate-level tennis and one of whom is an All-American three years running.
